casinos of Stanley Ho

rsz_casinos.jpg
This is one of the casinos of Stanley Ho, the 88yo billionaire who owns casinos in Macau and Hong Kong and other businesses. Mr. Ho has 17 children one of whom, a daughter, is also a very successful casino owner. I asked the tour guide if she is married, and he said yes and that she is on her fourth husband. I said that was good because in China the number "4" is an unlucky number and asked the guide if he had her phone number. Unfortunately he didn't.

Incense Sticks

rsz_incense_sticks.jpg
These are actually gigantic incense "sticks" at the A-Ma Temple, Macau which is a Buddhist temple dedicated to the Buddhist sea goddess who blesses the fishermen of Macau. Tradition has it when the first Portuguese sailors came to Macau, they came to this temple and asked where they were. (They didn't know if they were in India, China or where.) Well, the monks of A-Ma temple said the name of the temple in Chinese - "Ma-Ge." The word eventually evolved into "Macau" which is the name of the city today. The tour guide said that it can take a month for one of these incense sticks to burn completely.
